Hey, hey, and hello!
I've recently been asked about business & social media, and decided to start a blog series answering those questions and more so that you'll have a resource to bookmark and come back to whenever you need it!
Most of the questions are specifically about building a photography business, but many of the answers can be applied to any vocation you have a passion to start or explore!
DO I NEED A DEGREE TO GET STARTED?
If you'd like to get one, go right ahead! In today's world, a degree isn't necessary to your success, but consistent work & continual learning certainly is!
I've personally learned the value of taking advantage of photography & business courses. I used to think I could learn enough to get started for free, without purchasing educational opportunities. When I came to the end of the free resources (YouTube, books, podcasts, newsletters, etc) THEN I could buy courses.
As it turns out...that's actually prideful and caused a lot of chaos and uncertainty in my business growth. Also, there is no.end. to free resources! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to learn! Soaking up info like a sponge in water is how I'd describe my brain sometimes, but thinking I could learn everything I needed to build and grow a lasting business without professional training was a mistake. Also, while all the free education was fantastic and taught me so.much. (and still does!), it was piecemeal. Free mini-courses, books, etc. had structure, but they didn't give me an orderly roadmap in which to plug all the pieces I had collected.
All that to say, DO invest in yourself and your future! For myself, I enrolled in Marie Forleo's B-School* and Hilary Rushford's Elegant Excellence* and both courses have helped me feel 'grounded' in a business sense, and have given me tried-and-true steps to follow for success. (More of what I've learned in later posts!)
As for the free information I've picked up over the years? Now it makes TONS more sense and I can apply everything exactly where I need it in my roadmap.
If you're able to find a business mentor or work for someone who is already established in your line of business, so much the better! Building a business is long, hard work, and you can have just as much joy and fulfillment in being employed as you would in building your own business, if not more!
Spend your dollars on education first, and that education will help you decide what to invest into your business whether that's gear, software, and so on. You'll be able to connect with your ideal clients faster and make their lives better with more detail and focus. Education gives you a golden ticket complete with hope, excitement, the opportunity to make lots of mistakes, and a sure way to recover from them and begin again.
Go forth and prosper, friend! And tell me what education has been your favorite so far or what you're enrolling in next! I'd love to cheer you on!
*B-School opens enrollment only once a year (usually in February), and you can sign up to find out when the next Elegant Excellence course will be available! If you stay tuned to Hilary's instagram account, you're in for delightful tips and encouragement, plus a notification when EE is open! By signing up for B-School through Hilary's link, I was able to receive EE for free! Definitely keep an eye out for that deal next year!
Hilary's other courses are excellent, too, and her heart for helping women be strong, beautiful, feminine, and successful is a delight!
I truly appreciate Marie's instruction as well, she is such an encourager! Just so you know, her YouTube show does have language pretty frequently, though B-School does not. :)
