My life flows on in endless song;
above earth’s lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?
When I’m sad, hurt, anxious, (and let’s be honest: grumpy) or walking any other sort of dusty, troublesome part of this life journey that leaves me with a dull feeling, lacking zest to work diligently and serve faithfully, there is a way to have my heart brightened, and yours too when you find yourself in the same place.
Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
What though my joys and comforts die?
I know my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am His!
How can I keep from singing?
You and I are human. Very human. And it is okay to acknowledge that you don’t have it all together, that you can’t see what’s next, that you don’t know how you’re going to get through X, and the list goes on.
That’s all normal. And good, actually.
How??? You ask?
Because, dear one, Christ alone is our All-Sufficiency. Truly. All-Sufficient. No one else understands everything the way He does. He has perfect knowledge and experience with anything we could possibly go through, for He has gone through every bit of it (and more) Himself, and His eternal love of our finite selves is simply wondrous. As a dear saint has reminded me on many occasions: “You are loved with an everlasting love, and underneath are the everlasting arms."
We aren’t meant to stand strong, have it all together, or be conquerors….on our own. It’s impossible, and designed that way. Lean on Jesus, ask Him to show you all He has provided for you in Himself. He enables us to keep a quiet heart in the midst of all things tumultuous. A quiet heart experiences all kinds of troubles, but at it's root is trusting in the One who does all things well. A quiet heart can cry and not understand, but knows the Rock is always firm.
Take heart my friend :)
Self care is important (not selfish) during tough times, here are some ideas that have helped me very much:
Do healthy things: eat well, drink water, exercise.
Do something creative.
Sit and enjoy your favorite music.
Cry and sleep as you need to.
Enjoy sunrises & sunsets.
Ask the Lord for ways you can bring a bit-o-brightness into someone else’s life…for you know what it feels like to need it.
Pray for your friends and family individually, that they may also persevere through the long, hard, situations
Ask for prayer yourself. It’s not easy to be vulnerable, but very necessary. Bearing one another's burdens involves talking about them and asking for help and comfort.
Some songs that have encouraged me lately:
What have you found to be comforting during long, hard, times?
If you need a friend, do send me a line, I'm here for you <3
